The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India on February 15, 2024, aiming to empower residential households to generate their own electricity through rooftop solar installations. The scheme seeks to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and provide free electricity to one crore households across the country.

Key Features of the Scheme:

– Subsidy Provision: The scheme offers a subsidy covering 60% of the cost for solar systems up to 2 kW capacity and 40% for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity, capped at 3 kW. This translates to a subsidy of ₹30,000 for a 1 kW system, ₹60,000 for a 2 kW system, and ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system.

Eligibility Criteria:
– The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
– Must own a house with a suitable roof for installing solar panels.
– Should have a valid electricity connection.
– Must not have availed any other subsidy for solar panels.

Application Process:
1. Register on the National Portal by selecting your state and electricity distribution company.
2. Choose a vendor and the make of the rooftop solar unit.
3. Install the solar plant through a registered vendor.
4. Apply for net metering and await inspection by the DISCOM.
5. Upon commissioning, submit bank account details to receive the subsidy within 30 days.

Financial Outlay: The scheme has an outlay of ₹75,021 crore and is set to be implemented until the fiscal year 2026-27.

Additional Benefits:
– Households can access collateral-free, low-interest loans at around 7% interest for installing residential rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW.
– The scheme is expected to save the government approximately ₹75,000 crore per year in electricity costs and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
